Welcome to the November 3R Technology Newsletter!
In this new 'recovery' era, IT staff are becoming increasingly tasked with finding ways to get more done with less. Outsourcing or virtualizing many routine functions such as installs and help-desk support have become increasingly common. There are areas in the IT department where 3R can help, such as data destruction and resale of decomissioned equipment. A recent article in Infoworld has an interesting article that we 'second'. See below!
On a related topic, we're hosting another free recycle event this month on November 19th! The response and turnout for these events have been great, so we'll try to continue to do them on a monthly basis. See below for details...
I also wanted to say thanks to all of our valued customers for their support and loyalty through these challenging economic times. We greatly appreciate your business and look forward to meeting the challenges and demands of another decade.
Hope you enjoy this month's issue!

The Importance of IT Asset Management
Deciding when it's time to make the leap to upgrade can be challenging enough. Once that process is managed, the next step is figuring out what do with the old equipment. Most IT departments don't want to deal with the difficult challenges of managing compliance with privacy laws and environmental regulations, as well as becoming help desk support for systems that they sell or donate. IT staff also don't generally want to become hardware salepeople! How to approach IT asset management is now becoming an integral part of the decision-making process for CIOs and CTOs to limit exposure and cut departmental costs. By actively managing the equipment, and making timely decisions, a company can reduce storage and disposal costs, create return revenue from resale of reusable assets, and ensure that their data security and environmental concerns are met. Infoworld recently had a great article on the subject. For the complete story, click here...

Zero Waste and Carbon Neutral Seattle I'm sure I'm not the only one who is tired of tossing phone books directly from the front stoop into the recycle bin. For those of us who do our searching online, phonebooks have gone the way of the dinosaur. (Sorry dinosaurs, we keep picking on you...)
Zero Waste Seattle is trying to change all of that. It's a simple idea, really. Why not opt-in to receive a phone book, than have to opt-out? Zero Waste is working is just that by petitioning the Seattle City Council and Mayor's office to enact legislation to change the way phone companies send out their directories.

Spotlight: Internap - Taking the Data Center Green
When it comes to green considerations in data center design and implementation - nowhere else is it more clear that the details count. Next year it’s estimated that data center power will be 3% of the total energy consumption in the United States. Tiny improvements In energy consumption can make a tremendous difference.
In their Sabey facility, Internap has taken their green initiatives seriously. One simple, but highly effective green feature is their outside air economizers, which allow the often cool northwest temperatures to help moderate cooling for their client’s racks. In 2011, they will also be putting in Hot Isle Containment Curtains, which allow for differing zones of temperature within an area in order to optimize energy consumption. This implementation will cut energy spent air conditioning by as much as 15%, while still allowing customers to use up to 10Kw per rack.
For more information on their green data center programs, go to http://www.internap.com, or contact Chris Balocco at cbalocco@internap.com .
