Welcome to the October 3R Technology Newsletter!
We were particularly moved by a recent IT-related presentation in Seattle about Year Up - please check out the article below. It's a uniquely inspiring "hand up" program that pragmatically provides the opportunity for urban youth to receive the training, support and placement to succeed in technical positions in the corporate world. Students are given the structure and skills to obtain positions such as help desk or network technicians. Very cool stuff! Of course, we have a few articles about recycling, too. Hope you enjoy this month's issue! Note: We protect all our customers' information, and we never sell, share, or release your email address. If you wish to opt out of receiving this newletter, please click the unsubcribe link at the bottom of this email, and our apologies for any inconvenience.
As thanks for your continued support, there is a clip-out below for $25 off any $100 or more of refurbished technology in our retail store!

India to Ban Import of e-Waste from Developed Countries Export of electronic waste to developing countries is still a huge problem. After cases of e-waste smuggling were reported recently, the Indian government plans to ban the import of used computers and other electronic waste coming from developed nations like U.S., Australia, Canada and parts of Europe. The decision of the government will be considered at the Economic Intelligence Council meeting which will be chaired by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, reports Pradeep Thakur of Times of India.

Year Up - Changing Lives, Changing Business We just found out about this great organization - and it's just recently started a Seattle chapter. Year Up is a one-year, intensive training program that provides urban young adults, 18-24, with a unique combination of technical and professional skills, college credits, an educational stipend and corporate internship.
Their success is instilled in their graduates, enabling them to move on to full-time employment and higher education. They have great results, and lots of compelling stories of personal change and growth from disadvantaged individuals who didn't have a lot of other opportunity to succeed in their life.
Check out their website for the full story at http://www.yearup.org.

E-Cycle Washington Collection Up
With nearly 26 million pounds of covered electronic products collected through August, Washington State's electronics recycling program is on track to meet its 2009 numbers. To date, almost 26 million pounds of electronics have been gathered through the state program. Televisions made up 62.7 percent of the 25.9 million pounds of electronics collected under E-Cycle Washington (16.3 million pounds). In addition, monitors were 28 percent of the total collected volume, and desktop and laptop computers made up the remaining nine percent.
