August 2011 3R Technology Newsletter
3R Technology - IT Asset Management and e-Waste Recycling
There are some big changes coming up at 3R Technology!

We're pleased to announce that we've moving in September to our new location at

5511 1st Ave South
Seattle, WA 98108

We've spent the last three and half years at our current facility, managing our growing pains until we found the right place to establish as our new home. And now we have!

Our new facility will still be conveniently located in the SODO area of Seattle, right on 1st Ave South, with almost 12,000 sq ft for processing, warehousing and retail activities. It's only two miles from our current location, with very convenient access from I-5, SR-99, and downtown Seattle. The new location will be much more accessible and user-friendly for our retail customers, including plenty of off-street parking, and an enhanced and customer-friendly show room.

In August, before the move, we'll have a series of events to help celebrate, including a free recycling event this month and a special moving sale. Once we move in, look forward to a grand opening sale, and an open house. So stay tuned!

We look forward to seeing you here and at our new facility in September. Thank you very much to everyone for your continued business that makes this transition possible!

How Battery Recycling Happens (Part 2)

Lead Acid Batteries are broken apart in a hammer mill; a machine that hammers the battery into pieces, rather than shredding it. The broken battery pieces are then placed into a vat, where the lead and heavy materials fall to the bottom and the polypropylene plastic floats. The plastic pieces are scooped away and the liquids are drawn off, leaving the lead and heavy metals. The polypropylene is washed, dried, and sent for plastic recycling where the pieces are melted, and the molten plastic is put through an extruder that produces small plastic pellets of a uniform size. The pellets are sold to a manufacturer of battery cases and the process begins again.

Lead grids, lead oxide, and other lead parts of the batteries are cleaned and heated in a smelting furnaces. The molten lead is then poured into ingot molds. After a few minutes, the impurities float to the top of the still molten lead in the ingot molds. These impurities are scraped away and the ingots are left to cool. When the ingots are cool, they’re removed from the molds and sent to battery manufacturers, where they’re re-melted and used in the production of new batteries.

Thanks to Jack at All Battery Sales and Service for the great information on battery recycling!
