November Newsletter 2011: Landfill Mining, Reusing Servers, and e-Cycle WA Recycling Numbers

Landfill Mining?!?

Landfill mining may be just around the corner in older waste facilities that have reached or are close to reaching their capacity. In addition to reducing the amount of material in landfills, 'mining' can result in the recovery of precious metals such as aluminum and copper that may have been landfilled at a time when commodity prices were not as great, and the incentives to recycle were not so omnipresent.

Waste Management and other companies in the industry are said to be exploring pilot projects to mine landfills, and in Europe, Advanced Plasma Power is actively working on a project in Belgium utilizing plasma technology in processing landfill waste to create electricity and reusable methane gas.

e-Cycle WA Recycling Up in September 2011

In September 2011, e-Cycle Washington collectors sent in 3.6 million pounds of TVs, monitors and computers for recycling.  This is about a 25% increase over the 2.9 million pounds recycled in September 2010.

This is slightly ahead of last year’s pace with 31 million pounds collected through the first nine months of 2011 compared to 28.8 million pounds in 2010.  Continued public education efforts and an increasing number of drop-off sites and services (now at 270) appear to be having an impact on the volume of electronics coming into the program.

The detailed county-by-county breakdown of the September 2011 data provided by the Washington Materials Management & Financing Authority can be found on the E-Cycle Washington web site.

What can you do with an Old Server?

Quite a bit, as it turns out...

If you have a server with an onboard RAID (the hardware to manage two or more drives), you can set the software that manages the RAID to a "Type Zero" configuration and use it to wipe data off of multiple hard drives at once.

It's also a great way to test installing different server operating systems or put together a cheap local file server or media server.

It's All About You!

Perhaps the best day to stop by our retail store this year is November 26th! American Express is giving card members who register their card for the Small Business Saturday offer a $25 statement credit when they spend $25 or more at businesses like 3R Technology.

As an extra incentive, if you spend $100 or more at 3R technology on November 26th, we'll discount another $25 of savings. Which means that a $100 computer would only end up costing you $50 using your American Express card on that day.

For more information on the Small Business Saturday offer, check out the FB page for details.
