3R Technology and R2 Certification in 2012

R2 Solutions

We have some great news at 3R for the New Year!

First, we're lowering our recycle rates! See below for more details.

We're also starting the process of R2 Certification. The R2 standard is shorthand for "Responsible Recycling Practices for Use in Accredited Certification Programs for Electronics Recyclers".

Certification to the R2 Standard will provide even greater assurance to our customers that we are doing the right thing with their electronic waste and data that they entrust to us.

The R2 standard establishes requirements relating to environmental, health, safety, and security aspects of electronics recycling. R2 also requires e-recyclers to assure that  toxic material streams are managed safely and responsibly by downstream vendors-all the way to final disposition. It also prohibits e-recyclers and their downstream vendors from exporting these toxic materials to countries that have enacted laws making their import illegal.

We're very much looking forward to completing the process and sharing the results of our certification with all of you!

Happy New Year!

Lower Electronics Recycling Fees

For 2012, we've lowered our recycling fees on most items and simplified our rate structure. Items not covered by the e-Cycle WA program (excluding media shredding and batteries) are now just $0.15 a lb.

We are always accepting PCs, laptops, and servers for free, regardless of age or completeness.

Go to our electronics recycling rates page for the list of materials we accept and the associated recycle fees. We've also listed the average weights for typical e-waste items on our website.

We have many offers and announcements available only to our customers via Facebook and Twitter. Keep in touch in the way you prefer!

Ten Things You Can Keep Out of the Garbage

We found this interesting list of items that are either compostable or recyclable. Some of them are obvious - such as rechargeable batteries. But they are a few other ones we hadn't heard of before. For the list, check out the Earth 911 website.

Seattle Plastic Bag Ban

Seattle passed a ban in December of 2011 prohibiting the use of plastic bags for retail or grocery sales. The ordinance is planned to take effect in July of 2012. Use of paper bags will incur a $0.05 surcharge to the customer.

Seattle's ordinance allows plastic bags for produce, bulk foods and meat. Restaurants will still be able to use them for take-out as well as patrons of food banks and farmers' markets.

Also, commercial plastic bags to line garbage cans, pick up dog waste and bag yard debris are okay.

In the 3R Technology store, we reuse plastic bags and cardboard boxes for retail purchases. However, we always encourage shoppers to  bring their reusable bag!

King County Carpet Recycling Guidelines

King County recently released guidelines for flooring contractors to follow when prepping carpet materials for recycling. When used, these best practices will help ensure that carpet removed from buildings is suitable for recycling.
